Bananas on Keto: Are They Friendly or Not?

Posted: Jul 16, 2022 · Updated: Sep 3, 2025 by Luka · 1 Comment

Are you following a keto diet but wondering whether you can include bananas in your meal plan? If so, you may ask yourself, "Are Bananas Keto-Friendly?" This article will delve into this question to provide a clear and informative answer.

The keto diet has been gaining a lot of popularity lately, and for a good reason. This high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet can help you lose weight, improve your mental focus and clarity, and even help to reverse some serious health conditions.

But one of the big questions people have about the diet is whether or not bananas are keto-friendly. After all, they are a pretty carb-heavy fruit.

So, are bananas keto-friendly or not? The answer is… it depends.

Here's a closer look at why bananas might not be ideal for those following a strict keto diet, as well as some tips for enjoying them if you are following a more moderate approach to the diet.

Bananas and Carbohydrates

One of the main reasons that bananas might not be considered keto-friendly is because of their carbohydrate content. One medium banana contains about 27 grams of carbohydrates, according to USDA.

Exploring the Compatibility of Bananas with the Keto Diet

The keto diet has become increasingly popular in recent years, and many people are looking for keto-friendly foods that they can enjoy without fear of disrupting their diet. Bananas are a typical food that people wonder about, as they are high in carbohydrates. However, there are a few things to remember regarding bananas and the keto diet.

First, it's important to note that not all bananas are created equal. Some bananas are higher in sugar and carbs than others. Second, the ripeness of the banana also affects its carb and sugar content. A ripe banana will have more sugar and carbs than a less ripe banana.

That said, a single banana still contains around 30 grams of carbs, which is way too high for most people on the keto diet. On the other hand, a keto-friendly food like avocado only has about 2 grams of carbs per serving. So, while bananas might not be completely off-limits on the low-carb diet, they should definitely not be eaten on keto.

However, if you are following a low-carb or paleo diet, then you can probably include bananas in your diet in moderation

Conclusion

There is a lot of debate over whether or not bananas are keto-friendly.

While they contain carbohydrates, they also have a lot of other nutrients that make them a good choice for people on a low-carb or paleo diet.

On the other hand, they're relatively high in carbs and sugar, so they're not the best choice if you want to stay in ketosis.
