5-Day Egg Fast: A Comprehensive Guide to Rapid Keto Results

Posted: Apr 25, 2016 · Updated: Sep 3, 2025 by Tisa · 140 Comments

Curious about the buzz surrounding the keto egg fast? This intriguing approach, often referred to simply as an "egg fast," is gaining popularity in the low-carb and keto community. Despite varying interpretations found online, the egg fast typically involves a short-term, focused diet primarily used to accelerate weight loss, often yielding results within just 5 days.

While the science behind the egg fast remains largely unexplored, many keto enthusiasts report significant success in overcoming weight loss plateaus with a 5-day egg fast. The anecdotal evidence from social media and forums is compelling, though a scientific understanding of its efficacy is still developing. As someone immersed in the keto lifestyle, I've gathered insights and observations about the egg fast that might shed some light on its effectiveness.

Understanding the Egg Fast

The Egg Fast, a unique dietary approach within the keto community, involves a strict regimen of consuming primarily eggs, healthy fats, and full-fat cheese over a span of 3 to 5 days. The rules are straightforward: consume a minimum of 6 eggs daily, accompanied by 1 tablespoon of fat per egg, and limit cheese intake to the equivalent number of eggs consumed.

This egg-centric diet results in a macronutrient distribution that aligns with the keto philosophy—extremely low in carbs, high in fats, and moderate in protein. However, unlike typical keto diets, the Egg Fast has a notable absence of fiber sources like greens, seeds, and nuts. Due to this, I advocate for a short-term commitment to the Egg Fast. Supplementing with magnesium, potassium, and vitamins, along with consuming ample water (at least 10 cups daily), is advisable to balance the diet's restrictive nature. Remember, these are personal suggestions and not medical advice.

Exploration of Egg Fast Efficacy

But what makes the Egg Fast effective? Predominantly, it appears to facilitate significant water loss. Yet, beyond this immediate effect, many report sustained weight loss or maintenance post-fast. This could hint at underlying hormonal interactions affecting metabolism, a fascinating area ripe for scientific research. As the understanding of the Egg Fast evolves, so will our insights into its mechanisms and long-term impacts.

Anticipating Results from the Egg Fast

Embarking on the Egg Fast, a distinctive aspect of the keto regimen, isn't about calorie restriction but focuses on a specific nutritional profile: high in fats, low to moderate in proteins, and virtually zero carbohydrates. When adhered to for a continuous five-day period, participants typically report experiencing noticeable water loss, and in some cases, fat loss—especially when coupled with mindful eating and regular exercise.

The outcomes of the Egg Fast, however, can vary from person to person. Factors like starting weight, muscle mass, and exercise frequency play a significant role in determining individual results. It's important to set realistic expectations and understand that each body responds differently to this unique dietary approach.

A lot of people on low-carb and keto diets does 5 days of egg fast to break their weight loss stall. Surprisingly, it works for majority of them.

Key Rules for a Successful Egg Fast

Embarking on the Egg Fast requires adhering to specific guidelines to effectively break through a weight loss plateau. Here's a comprehensive list of the rules that are generally recommended for those undertaking this unique dietary regime:

  1. Egg as Primary Nutrition: Eggs are the main source of fat and protein.
  2. Fat Accompaniment: Consume 1 tablespoon of healthy fat with each egg.
  3. Timely Egg Consumption: Eat your first egg within 30 minutes of waking up.
  4. Regular Eating Intervals: Meals should be spaced every 3 to 5 hours.
  5. Scheduled Eating: Stick to the eating schedule and consume at least one egg, even if not feeling hungry.
  6. Cheese Intake: You may have 1 ounce of full-fat cheese per egg consumed.
  7. Minimum Egg Requirement: Aim to eat at least 6 eggs each day.
  8. Pre-Bedtime Eating: Your last egg should be eaten at least 3 hours before going to bed.
  9. Diet Soda Allowance: Up to 3 cans of diet soda are permitted daily.
  10. Spices and Sauces: Spices and hot sauces can be used but in moderation. Ensure any sauces are low in carbs.
  11. Sweeteners: Low carb sweeteners are permissible.

I have no idea, who's come up with the rules. Moreover, every source has them listed a tiny bit differently, but the basics are staying the same. Anyways, they do make sense in a way if you consider the macronutrient outcome at the end of the day. Maybe you are dairy intolerant or hate cheese. Well, choose something else with similar nutritional value: high fat, protein, and almost no carbs. Or eat more eggs if that acceptable to you.

Health Considerations for the Egg Fast

When contemplating the Egg Fast, it's essential to evaluate its health implications. Primarily, it's designed as a short-term dietary strategy, typically not exceeding 5 days. For a healthy individual, this duration should pose no significant risk, provided there is sufficient energy intake to support daily activities.

Eggs, the cornerstone of this diet, are highly nutritious, offering a rich source of essential micronutrients. Thus, during the 5-day Egg Fast, nutrient deficiencies are unlikely to be a concern. However, the quality and freshness of the eggs used are crucial. Always ensure you're using fresh eggs to avoid any health risks associated with spoiled or contaminated eggs.

While the Egg Fast can be an interesting dietary experiment, it is advisable to practice it infrequently—perhaps once every six months. The long-term health benefits of this approach remain unclear, and it's more of a short-term solution rather than a sustainable lifestyle choice.

I Did a 5 Day Egg Fast on the Keto Diet and This Is What Happened

My Personal 5-Day Egg Fast Experiment

Back in 2016, I embarked on a personal challenge to explore the Egg Fast for myself. This experiment was born out of my fascination with food challenges and a desire to address some physical changes. After noticing some unwanted puffiness following a shift in my workout routine, and indulging a bit too much in keto treats, I was curious to see how my body would respond to the Egg Fast.

I've decided to try the Egg Fast myself. One of the reasons being that I like little food challenges. 😉 The other reason is that I've noticed my body puffing up since I started lifting heavier again. I know it's what usually happens at first when one changes their workout routine but still gets on my nerves. Plus, I've been consuming too much keto treats lately. Additionally, I think I've even been going way over my ideal daily calorie intake (though I still have no idea what my ideal is, honestly), and I think that doesn't help getting rid of puffiness. Long story short, I wanted to lose a couple of pounds of the excess water and see how my body responds to the egg fast.

I've decided to go on a 5-day Egg Fast (instead of just 3), but with one of the above rules broken (or ignored). I love working out in a fasted state in the mornings, so during the fast I will just consume green tea with a little bit of coconut oil and guarana every morning. It's not bulletproof green tea, but it's been my morning pre-workout routine for quite a while now, and I like it, so I'll stick to it.

What I find quite interesting, is the rule about consuming diet soda. Ok, diet sodas, they're low carb, sugar-free, and all that. But, if I were forming the rules, I would limit all the artificial sweetener and/or sugar alcohols (even erythritol) consumption to one snack per day at the most. That is because, for a lot of us, they cause fake hunger or even cravings. I don't drink diet soda often myself, but I guess they have the same effect (or not?) as sugar-free sweets. My explanation is that the brain gets the sweet taste but not the serotonin release after the intake, that is why it just wants more. But I won't turn all scientific just now. Still, need to start writing the science section of this blog.

So, on to my 5 days on the Egg Fast. I'll be writing about my well-being, losing pounds (or not), workouts, and especially the meals, plus the amount of eggs/fat/cheese consumed. Most of the recipes are taken from other blogs, and I'll direct you to them as I go.

I won't plan ahead too much. I'll take my time to choose and try out as many egg fast recipes as possible. It's going to be a week of working from home, and this allows me to get familiar with some of the meals I could make in advance on extra busy weeks.

If you wish, you can use this diary as a source for your Egg Fast meal plan. Or take it just as an interesting read from a fit person who's using the fast as an experiment rather than a way to lose a significant amount of weight. Of course, if you're on your own fat loss journey, my diary can still come in handy in practice. Hopefully!

Read about my Day 1. Or jump to Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, or Day 5. Note: You can find out about the overall egg-fast outcome at the end of my Day 5 post. Enjoy!

Does this sound boring? Not if you consider rewarding yourself with an egg fast friendly dessert.

Does it sound unhealthy? I guess it could be if you tried to attempt it cold turkey, not being keto-adapted first, if you have any medical issues (consult your doctor first!) or if you restrict the calorie intake too drastically.

It helps to know that eggs are very nutritious, they come with extremely healthy micronutrients, but it is also very handy to get some insight into what happens with the eggs as they age!

Hi, Julee. Eating an egg within the first 30 minutes of waking is an arbitrary rule of the egg fast. I never followed it, though. I guess it's there to keep you from getting too big an appetite in the morning.
If you wait for 5 hours, that is already intermittent fasting, I would guess. Do what feels best for you, I personally like to exercise fasted in the morning and eat later.

Hi, Denise. Everything is described in "the rules" of egg fast within this post. Of course, you can cook the eggs, why not. 6 is a minimum, not a maximum. You should eat according to your daily calorie needs. Snack on high-fat cheese. That is what egg fast is about. Nobody forbids you doing any other way but see if you can go 3 days with only eggs and fats (and cheese) and what happens. If you don't feel well, don't do it.

      Hi, Christa,
Whatever suits you best. Do check the nutrient info, though. Pesto usually contains pine nuts which contain around 4g carbs per ounce. I don't think there should be a considerable amount of carbs in a T of pesto, to be honest.

      Hi, Kristin.
Miracle noodles contain a whole bunch of soluble fiber. The point of egg fast is to consume moderate protein and high fats that come with eggs and healthy clean fat, and to not consume much fiber for 3 to 5 days. That is why you can see a quick water loss and weight loss. Any other way is not considered to be egg fast anymore. But none of us is here to tell you what is actually allowed or not allowed to consume.

Egg fast is about eggs and fats and some cheese which you can call a keto snack. You can modify it as you wish and see if it works for you. Unsweetened black tea shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think that should hurt! I think it hurts when someone restricts themselves too much from what they enjoy for too long. So a little half and half in coffee should be fine. But if you can survive without half and half for 5 days straight, to really get those carbs close to zero, that would be for you to decide. All the best.

      Hi, Shirley.
I wouldn't panic about any of these. I, myself, never go off supplements that I'm on before an egg fast.
If you consider that a T of your homemade yogurt is low in carbs, do it. I do, however, think that the egg fast is a lot about being psychologically (presuming you are physically in a good health) capable of restricting food variety for 5 days straight. When one starts taking things more freely, it is just not the same anymore. But if it works for you, I don't see a problem. When I undergo a protocol like this one, or sometimes AIP protocol, I don't allow any exceptions; For me, the fun is in feeling like a winner at the end of the "fasting" period, when I can say: " I did it!" instead of "I kind of did it" or "I did it but ... had diet sodas there and some carrots there and some beefsteak the other day ..." Not that there's anything wrong with any of these, it is just the good feeling of being highly disciplined for a few days. It's what works for me.

First of all, feel healthy and strong before trying, and don't undereat. In the end, it is mainly about taking in close to 0 carbs and moderate protein for all the excess water to flush out of your body. With added exercise, we can probably talk about fat loss, too ...

But if you can handle the number of eggs and the fat amount that you need for the one meal, I don’t see why you wouldn’t give it a try. At the end of the day, it is important how you feel doing what you’re doing or eating the way you’re eating.

Hi, Brian. If you use almonds, you are going to consume a considerable amount of carbs, especially if you eat almonds instead of all the healthy fats you are supposed to eat.
I really can't say how many you should eat, as it is your choice to do an almond version of an egg fast, and only you know how you are going to react to it. One cup of whole almonds has around 30 grams of carbs and 70 grams of fat. If you consumed 5 Tbsp of butter daily, you would get in around the same amount of fat and almost no carbs. The whole point of an egg fast is getting in pretty much only fat and protein for a few days. I suggest you use an app like MyFitnessPal to track your intake and macros.

Hi, Annerie! Thanks for the question.

What makes you think you are not in ketosis? If what you have written in your comment is true, there is no way you are not in ketosis.
If you have been measuring your ketone levels with urine strips, you must know that this method is very unreliable. That's because only certain types of ketones are in urine (blood meters are thus more reliable), plus, ketones in urine usually show up at the beginning of keto dieting because the body hasn't utilized itself to efficiently using them.

In the end, what really matters is how you feel and what results you can see in your body and mental state.
Stay consistent, and all will be fine. 🙂

What are your thoughts on consuming a high quality bone broth (8-16 oz/day) while on the egg fast protocol? I am trying to jump start my system (possible hashimito’s) so i have been gluten free for a couple of months and just added bone broth to my daily consumption...also hoping that collagen works a little magic on the skin (primarily affected organ). Also, well written with good descriptive comments so that someone can understand what might be expected. Thank you!

      Hi,
Thank you for the comment! I think bone broth should do no harm. On the contrary, even. I see it as a good source of fat and protein (collagen) that one could easily implement into the egg-fast routine. The egg fast has arbitrary rules anyways, so I see no limits in trying out what works for you as an individual. If you are looking into losing weight, I would still watch that the calorie intake doesn't go over your daily needs because of too much "hidden" liquid fat ... I, for example, make my bone broth quite fatty. 🙂

I just checked the label on the broth I use and it it lists 0 fat. I do not make my own as I have no local source for the bones. Thank you so much for the quick reply and insight. Thinking of trying this after the Halloween festivities. I have promised a baking frenzy and while I convert everything to gluten free, it is still a feast of buttercream, sweet potatoes (brownies), and honey, powdered sugar and almond flour.

      Hi,
If you feel strong enough to do it, I don't see why not. Doesn't sound like a completely irrational food restriction time-wise. I would say that for me a 24-hour fast after the egg-fast could be a bit challenging, though. I'd personally handle the fast easier before the egg-fast to jump into a relatively deep ketosis quickly and then support it for a few days by consuming only eggs and fats. It is just my subjective opinion so you still have to answer the question yourself. 🙂

Hello. 6 eggs are the minimum. You should consume enough according to your daily calorie needs/goals. Only you know what those might be.

It might be helpful to know that 6 eggs sum up to around 430 kCal and if you combine them with 6 T of butter, it all sums up to not much more than 1000 kCal. That's not enough energy for a day for anybody. Additional calories depend on whether you consume cheese or not, or whether you have more eggs and fats than the stated minimum.

So, yes, you should consume enough, and if that means having 4 eggs for breakfast, why not.

Hi. You can eat avocado but that won't really be egg fasting anymore. While avocado is fatty, it's not pure fat, and the point behind egg fasting is having no carbs, hi fats and moderate protein.

I think it works for the same reason any keto diet does, getting the body adapted to draw energy from fats rather than any other nutrients like carbs.

So I did it for 5 days but not following it to the T. I ate salad and one night i mixed the eggs with ground beef and need less to day i dropped 5 lbs. I did not drink the bullet proof coffee (as coconut oil makes me sick) I drunk regular coffee with my sweet cream cold stone creamer. Maybe if i followed it exactly i would have lost more.

I do this every couple months. 6 eggs a day for 5 days. I only boil them but you can scramble or fry if you like. I have 2 for breakfast. 2 with a raw salad (no dressing) for lunch. And 2 for dinner. I also mix a teaspoon of butter and some sriracha for flavor and I dip. Altogether I lose about 8 lbs in 5 days.

My husband and I did the egg diet for a week and both lost 10-11lbs. We stopped for a day and wanted to go for a second week. However it’s day 3 and I haven’t lost anything! I’m so discouraged! Also it’s harder for me to eat the eggs. I can hardly eat the 6 eggs. Maybe I’m not eating enough?Should I keep going? Also I’m starting to get a fever and sore throat but I’m not sure if it’s related to the diet or the weather. Thanks for any feedback!

          Hi, Jenny.
First of all, make sure you feel alright when attempting this radical diet. I don't think fever and sore throat are a result of the diet but I would rather recommend taking care of yourself with proper nutrition first when feeling unwell. Do the diet when healthy, please. Second, it is not meant to be a long term diet so give it another try for 5 days in a month or so. Not eating enough can result in weight-loss stall.

My question is; today I have had belly pain after each consumption of eggs:( during my workout I had a weird taste in my mouth as well....I almost had other food to just make myself feel better however I didn't.. ..I want to complete this...as well as day 6,7...etc....impossible that the fat is upsetting my gut?

I have only lost approximately 3 pounds...however I rid my water weight prior to doing this...I feel leaner...my bowel movements have decreased significantly:(

Anyways I enjoyed all the different egg flavors...so did my kids!!

    Thanks so much!

I'm just going to jump in if it's ok: Yes, men over all require more protein, carbs and calories because of their naturally occurring higher ratio of bone & muscle mass as compared to the average woman. How do I know this? I concluded it when I was calculating my body fat percentage and played with the facts I entered. What gave a result of 27% body fat for me, gave a much lower body fat if I changed the gender to male! (No I'm not a transgender). Try it yourself & you'll see! Thank you "My Sweet Keto" for posting this diet! It's helped me get past a slow loss plateau I've been on!

The only things I can eat are eggs, butter and coffee, it seems ( and MCT oil). Usually I can eat meat too, but cut it out when things get really bad. So now I can just say I'm on an "egg fast". 🙂 I do adore scrambled eggs, but after a while I yearn for something a little different. I'm eager to check out your recipes. Knowing how long doctors take off around the holidays, this might be one loooooong egg fast.

Hi- so i had great success on my first Egg Fast (EF) for 6 days (very little cheese) and kept it basic (Lost 7lbs total). Then i restarted a couple days later but added up to 4oz of cream cheese for variety and lost no weight/inches over 4 days. Then i switched to dairy free and still no weight loss over 4 more days. I’m at same weight from the end of my 1st egg fast. Only diff is i ate maybe 6 eggs/day 1st time and eat between 6-10/day.

Should i go back to Keto for a few days and then try again? I didnt think I’d stall while on EF (also it was woman time of the month), but what the heck? Is my body too used to eating eggs? unsure what to do and why my body that was doing so well on the EF before is rejecting it now. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Hi - something simple is exactly what i want. Im no chef or have time to hangout in the kitchen all day making meals. I have an egg cooker (BEST purchase ever - steams up to 7 eggs and they taste better!)

I've been doing the strict Keto diet for 2.5 weeks using an app to keep track of my macros/calories but stuck. I think i should maybe wait a week since as a woman our "time of the month" causes water retention/fluctuations and maybe That's my "stall" but maybe not.

Is it too soon to try the Egg Fat Fast? I'm probably NOT fat-adapted yet (usually 3-5 weeks). Also, did Atkins for a couple weeks (dropped my water weight) prior to changing to Keto diet. Since, I lost 5 lbs in the first week and nothing in the last 1.5 weeks. I need to lose 60 lbs to reach ideal healthy weight. How often is it safe to do this diet? Im not even sure if i can do it but i will try 3 days first.

Thanks for your help in advance!

      Hi, Susie!
Congrats on what sounds like a nice start of a keto lifestyle!

My strongest advice is to remain patient and make sure you don't lose too quickly. In that regard, I'd wait a few more weeks on "just" keto before trying egg fast. You can, of course, try it out anytime you wish but do stop if you feel it's not the time yet. When you try it, make sure you get in adequate calories. Restricting too hard can lead to rapid fat loss but not in the long term.

You are right, the woman's cycle plays with us a lot. Due to hormone fluctuations, it often makes no sense to compare your results week by week but rather month by month.

Keep eating healthy and enough plus some exercise and on the long term there should be some nice results.

      Best regards!

I believe the science behind the egg fast would be similar to the low carb theories by Dr. Atkins. He describes in detail why low carb diets work, but not specifically about just eggs. it looks like a very low carb and fairly high fat diet, which goes along with his theories. I'll be trying it over the next 5 days. 🙂

      Hi, Shiku. Thanks for following!

If I understand correctly, you have been keto for a while (fat adapted) but want to try out egg fasting, looking for a way to transit from the fast back to your casual keto eating?
My experience is, it is best to make it one non-egg fast meal a day once you've finished the egg fast. For example, on the first day after the egg fast, make one dish that would be your normal keto dish and keep the rest of the meals as if egg-fasting. On the second day after the fast, make two normal keto meals and the rest is egg meals. And so on, depending on how many meals a day you usually consume. I've never taken more than two days of transiting back to my usual eating.

Hope this helps. All the best!

If you run on carbs, you might experience some keto flu symptoms during an egg fast. This means it might be more difficult for you to bear eating only eggs and fats than if you already were fat adapted. Otherwise, I don't see why not. Hi, Uros!

I guess you can have as much as you can handle. 😉 I mean, when and if I decide to egg fast, I do not alter my coffee consumption. On the serious note, I am not a medical expert to tell anyone their daily allowance of coffee, so if you have any medical issues and/or experience any weird health symptoms after coffee consumption, talk to your doctor.

But if you just wanted to know if coffee alters egg fast results, my guess is, it might lead to a bit higher water excretion since it is slightly diuretic.

I don't see a problem in getting in more Tbsps of healthy fats than the number of eggs, but I do suggest being careful not to eat too little throughout the day as fats might make you feel full but your body still needs enough protein.

Is it ok to do a combination of fasts?
I was thinking of doing a Juice fast x Egg fast together.

I have no idea but, personally, I wouldn't mix sugar (supposing that juice is full of naturally occurring sugars from fruit) with high-fat intake for fat loss.

Hi, Robin! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Congrats!

Since no one knows exactly why egg fasting works, I can't say if breaking those egg fast rules a bit does actually affect the weight loss. My experience is that I lost the most the first time I did it for 5 days straight. It is true that I had more fat % at the time that on any further trial. I think one of the important variables in egg fasting, at least for me, is not taking in any processed meats, limiting erythritol and nuts, and avoiding those occasional pieces of dark chocolate. 🙂 So, I occasionally do 3-day "egg fasts" without restricting greens, and it makes me feel awesome.
